Keynote: Jarrett J. Krosocza
Saturday November 9, 2024 9:00am - 10:00am EST
Jarrett J. Krosoczka, known since boyhood as “JJK,” is the New York Times bestselling author/illustrator behind more than forty books for young readers, including his wildly popular Lunch Lady graphic novels, select volumes of the Star Wars™: Jedi Academy series, and Hey, Kiddo, which was a National Book Award Finalist. Krosoczka creates books with humor, heart, and deep respect for his young readers—qualities that have made his titles perennial favorites on the bookshelves of homes, libraries, and bookstores over the past twenty years.
Krosoczka has been a guest on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, profiled in The New York Times, featured on Good Morning America, and delivered three captivating TED Talks, which have accrued millions of views online. Krosoczka garners millions more views online monthly via the tutorials he produces for YouTube and TikTok.  As well as working on his books’ film and television adaptions, Krosoczka has also written for The Snoopy Show (Apple TV+) and served as a consultant for Creative Galaxy (Prime Video), and appeared in live segments for the show.

Realizing that his books can inspire young readers beyond the page, Krosoczka founded School Lunch Hero Daya national campaign celebrating school lunch staff. A consummate advocate for arts education, Krosoczka also established the Joseph and Shirley Krosoczka Memorial Youth Scholarships, which fund art classes for underprivileged children in his hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts.

About the Punto Urban Art Museum has two primary goals:1 – To create a beautiful, uplifting environment for Point residents, particularly for children to grow up in.
2 –To break down the invisible divide between the Point Neighborhood and the rest of Salem by inviting visitors into the Point to experience world-class art first-hand.

By creating a walkable, curated open air museum within three neighborhood blocks, the district is readily accessible to all that downtown Salem already has to offer to over a million tourists per year.
Bringing a fraction of Salem’s visitors to the Point neighborhood stands to be a transformative economic development boom to immigrant-owned local businesses.

The Voice Within: Ekphrasis as a Sense Making Tool
Saturday November 9, 2024 10:15am - 11:35am EST
I'm excited to be attending and presenting at the 2024 Massachusetts Art Educators Conference. I will be sharing a "user friendly" template that teachers can use to guide their students in authentic, and sophisticated written responses to art. This structure will prime in-depth discussions. When diverse perspectives are brought together, new thinking can emerge and from that new thinking, change becomes a possibility. Teaming with a colleague and mentor we embarked on a four year journey of research and fieldwork in the topic of Ekphrasis, an ancient Greek practice of connecting art with written work. Our research aims to connect the artist and the viewer through the shared experience of viewing, thinking and responding to art. We believe engaging with Ekphrasis fosters humanity. If you are attending the conference I invite you to join The Voice Within: Ekphrasis as a Sense Making Tool.

Ancient Greek culture connected art to writing (Ekphrasis). Participants will leave with a friendly, systematic approach ready to guide students in writing about their observations and ideas about creative works. Session: introduction, guided practice, and discussion.

These fuzzy friends can become your students' companions. Create your own new pal from synthetic fur, craft felt, fiberfill, and embellishments. Then take your sample and some extra materials back to your classroom or studio. Teaching materials and connections to state and national standards will be shared along with student rubrics and optional lesson extensions. This fur-flying workshop is sew much fun!
